Calèche drivers parked their carriages and steeds before Montreal’s city hall to protest the first day of a year-long ban on their industry in Old Montreal announced by Mayor Denis Coderre last week. Drivers and owners labelled the last-minute suspension of permits for the 24 horses that pull carriages in the city hasty, unfounded and ill-planned, and said it could cripple the livelihoods of many drivers who have worked decades. They promised to file a court injunction against the moratorium. The city called the halt over concerns of animal welfare, and that of bystanders and riders.
